Dorset Youth Orchestras perform "Victory"

"A huge success. . . David was thoroughly professional in his communication and quality of work." Dianne Ely, Dorset Music Service

Remembering the Great War, “Victory” was written specially to commemorate one hundred years since the Armistice of 1918. The profound atmosphere reflects the struggles, dangers and sufferings of a soldier’s life, eventually overcome by the feelings of hope, joy and elation at the prospect of a homecoming.

I was honoured to join Dorset Youth Orchestras on violin and percussion in the run up to their performance of my work. I wrote extra parts to cater for the talents of the different young members of the Dorset groups and joined everyone on marimba in the final performance of the work, conducted by William Goodchild in the Bournemouth Pavilion.

It was a huge success received with great enthusiasm from both the audience and young musicians and I'm incredibly grateful to the team at Dorset Music Service for this experience. Area Leader, Dianne Ely later wrote an endorsement of the work, which you can read here.

There is also a digital recording of 'Victory' on my SoundCloud samples here:

Incidental Music for the School Production of 'Othello'

In October 2017, I was given the honour of directing the music for the school production, Shakespeare’s ‘Othello’. This terrific responsibility included composing the music for the play as well as directing rehearsals with a small ensemble of musicians and privately with individual soloists. This was my first experience writing a large amount of music in a wide range of styles (including early 20th century swing: this style was completely new to me but after a few false starts ended up as being one of my favourite sections) and also, it was my conducting debut.

The production ran for two nights at the end of January 2018 and was widely praised by students and staff alike for its accompanying music, which a production review in The Fine Times Recorder described as ‘effective and interesting’ and one particular song as having an ‘aching beauty’.

The following song in particular was commended for its 'aching beauty'. Here, Desdemona's lament is sung by the stunning voice talents of Grace Macdonald (Desdemona) and Dannan White (Emilia).

Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra's Composer's Day

To widen my knowledge and experience, I attended the BSO Composer’s Day 2017, where works are performed in workshop by the full Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra. This provided me with fantastic tips for future compositions, excellent opportunities to make new contacts in networking sessions and learn more about orchestration, including composition for percussion.

Winning Composition for Bournemouth Arts by the Sea Festival 2016

During summer 2016, I participated in a Call for Scores opportunity for the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra’s contemporary music ensemble ‘ Kokoro’. This professional chamber ensemble specialises in new music and was looking for young composers across the South West to write pieces to be performed in concert as part of the Bournemouth Arts by the Sea Festival 2016 Programme: the theme was ‘The Sea and Voyages’.

In response, I composed a five-minute piece called ‘The Argonauts’, highlighting the key moments in the Argo’s voyage and quest to find the Golden Fleece. This included a variety of heroic, scary and melancholy themes.

Following a shortlist and a workshop, my piece was selected as a winner and was performed in the concert the following day. I was thrilled to learn so much from a process which included talking with professional musicians (the principal conductor and artistic advisor Mark Forkgen and the composer-in-residence Hywel Davies) to gain practical advice and expertise on my composition.

After further tweaking in spring 2017, ‘The Argonauts’ was also submitted as one of my GCSE Music coursework pieces.

School Song for 500th Anniversary

At the end of 2016, I won the in-school competition to re-write our school song as part of the 500 year centenary celebrations and was commissioned to write it to debut at the Christmas concert. This was my first experience of working with lyrics as well as music, so it was a particularly tough challenge, not just because I had so little time to prepare it.

After working with the school’s head of music Liam Carey, my song ‘Hart’ (named after our school and town emblem) was performed by the school vocal-group and orchestra in December and received fantastic feedback from the audience and my teachers. For this, I also received a special school badge in recognition of my contribution.

Bath Film Festival 2016 Entry

Two years ago, I entered the Bath Film Festival Film Score 2016 competition for young composers in the West of England. This involved writing an approximately ten-minute soundtrack to a short cartoon film. This was my first ever composing competition so I was pleased when it came seventh overall. I also received some great feedback to put into practise for future projects. This achievement also contributed to earning me my Creative Arts tie for music at school.
